Expansion valves are commonly used for refrigeration systems and many other applications. However, there are many more options available, including valves with multiple functions. Here are a few things to consider. Not all expansion valve accessories are created equal, so be sure to consider the size of the equipment you'll be using.
Manual expansion valves, also known as needle valves, are operated by hand. The pressure differential across the valve determines mass flow. Manual expansion valves are normally used as supplementary safety valves in bypass lines, but they are also used to control the flow rate through oil bleeder lines. Because they are non-regulating, they should not be used in systems with plate heat exchangers. When using manual expansion valves, any change in operating conditions would affect the evaporation process inside the plate heat exchanger. Manual flow regulation requires an adjustment in operation.
